#summerholidays2023

Are you guilty of posting airport check-ins on social or tagging friends on your trip whilst at the departure lounge? Selfie culture has led some insurance companies to penalize policy holders who post holiday snaps while they are away from home. In reality, if you are burgled while you are away, your insurance policy could be invalidated entirely.

Niall Quinn, Director, Gullion Ltd said, “Criminals are using the web to identify vacant properties so posting holiday snaps on Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter or TikTok while you are away from home is a green light for burglars.

The Financial Ombudsman, the Association of British Insurers and the police have all raised warnings about sharing holiday snaps while abroad however the trend continues with some even sharing real-time check in information at airports, accommodation and tourist attractions abroad , confirming that their homes are indeed vacant.

Niall added, “The devil is always in the detail and whilst your policy may not include Social Media Exclusion, it will likely state that the policyholder should take all reasonable precautions to avoid lodging a claim. This also extends to showcasing high end purchases such as designer handbags, jewellery, cars and more on social platforms.

“Our advice is to make your social accounts private, adjust your social channels so that you can review posts you are tagged in and privately message any of your #sunsetsabroad #nofilter #holiday2023 snaps.”
